Dear Reader, 

Welcome to the First edition of TRAMPOLINE NEWS for 2007.  My thanks to JOHN BEETON who continues to keep us all informed, as well as all those that continue to contribute to this important news letter.  Please circulate as widely as possible.

The National Technical Conference was a great success as usual, with speeches and presentations given in all disciplines including trampoline.  This is a valuable event for all disciplines and it is good to see that so many trampolinists are attending each year.

Cathy and her team have worked endlessly to ensure that the new coaching structure was delivered on time and it is now underway.  Hopefully the transition from the old to the new will be a smooth one! 

A revised strategic plan for 2007-09 has been produced, and Joanna and her team are continuing to work on the LTAD for trampoline to ensure that it is spot on for us!

2007 will be an exciting year for Competitions, with World Cups taking place in USA, Canada, Belgium and China. For all of our International performers, it is undoubtedly an important and busy year.

The climax of the year will come at the end of October when all eyes will be on our performers in the World Championships to be held in Canada.  With this being a vital competition in order to secure Olympic places, the pressure will be on.  The International Age Group Competition (IAGC) will follow the World Championships in November and the selection criteria are now being made available.  We wish all our competitors great success this season, be it on the international stage or within their region or club.

The new National Competition Structure proposal has been presented and I would like to stress the importance in not creating rumours and gossip.  There have been changes proposed to the whole way we approach competitions and we are working now to test and refine the ideas presented.  What was very pleasing was that the congress members present were very positive about the proposals and we hope to release more information soon, so watch this space….

Amanda Kirby, coach to Britain’s top gymnast Beth Tweddle, has been named the UK Female Coach of the Year at the 2006 Coaching Awards Dinner in London ENG last December.

Throughout 2006, City of Liverpool coach Amanda, has been pivotal in guiding Beth to her World and European titles; with all the congratulations that Beth has received, Amanda quite rightly has also been highly praised.

All members of Trampoline Gymnastics would wish to add their congratulations to Amanda for a job well done. Ed.

The FIG has released its long awaited DVD on the FIG 125^th Anniversary Gala held at the Geneva’s Arena.  The DVD features Irina Karaeveva, Anna Dogonadze, Yuri Nikitin amongst others. Contact the FIG at www.fig-gymnastics.com/shop/. Cost of DVD €20.

DMT Selection Criteria 2007

We are pleased to announce that the selection criteria for the Great Britain v Canada International Match, World Championships and International Age Group Competitions in 2007 have been published on the British Gymnastic web site. They can be found in the Download > Performance and Technical > Double Mini Tramp section.

We are all excited about the Great Britain v Canada Match, being held 23-26 August in Coventry, as it is the first DMT International Match to involve both Senior and Youth teams. The Canadians are recognised as world leaders in DMT, so this will be an excellent opportunity to check our readiness for World Championships.

Although the results from DMT Nationals were rather disappointing, we can see that some of the youth have made significant improvements over the summer and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone peaking for the first trial being held on Sunday 25^th February in Enfield.

IAGC 2007 (Amendment)

It should be noted that the team of 80 gymnasts for this event will be divided as published in Trampoline News No 41. However, 4 of the 8 remaining places will be available as wild cards and 4 (not 8 as published) for synchronised trampolining.  Apologies to all. Ed.

NEW FACILITIES

The grand opening of the Northampton Trampoline Centre (home of the 2000 British Olympian Jaime Moore) took place on Friday 1^st December 2006

The new trampoline centre, the best in Europe provides 12 trampolines and a foam landing pit. It provides easy access and a safe environment for people with disabilities as it will include 3 floor level trampolines and a sensory corner.

Thanks to English Gymnastics and Sport England, through the Community Club Development Fund, world class coach Tracy Whittaker-Smith can continue to develop and train both the local community and more advanced gymnasts, and keep Northamptonshire Trampoline Gymnastics Academy as one of the leading centres in the UK. The recipient of the 2006 BBC East Midlands Community Sports Coach of the Year said ‘The new trampoline facility is key to the development of trampoline gymnastics in Northamptonshire and we are committed to making sure that the Academy continues to provide access for the whole community as well as being a facility for those with a

World class future in the sport.’

The new world cup series gets underway early in April with the Great Britain team for these two events in the series (2007-2008) departing for Montreal CAN on the first leg of their journey to Lake Placid USA on Wed 28 March, for the first of their two competitions on 1^st and 2^nd April, before travelling on to Quebec City CAN for the second event on 6^th and 7^th April.

SELECTION POLICY 25^th World Championships: Individual Trampoline 1,2,3 November, 2007 Quebec, Canada

The selection policy described below will be applicable at the following selection events:

Selection Event 1: Senior British Championships, 14/15 July 2007 (1 compulsory, 1 voluntary routine, zero Final) (Using F.I.G. rules)

Selection Event 2: Trial Event 8 or 9 September 2007 (venue TBC) (By invitation) (1 compulsory, 1 voluntary routine, zero Final) (Using F.I.G. rules)

Selection Event 3: Trial Event 15 or 16 September 2007 (venue TBC) (By invitation) (1 compulsory, 1 voluntary routine, zero Final) (Using F.I.G. rules)

All trampolinists who fulfil the competition requirements, in terms of nationality and age, will be eligible to compete in the selection event; if it is felt by the Technical Managers they are of the requisite standard to be competitive.

Any trampolinists wishing to be considered for selection must declare in writing their intention to participate in the selection process prior to 1^st July 2007, this includes those performers who may be pre-selected.

Exemption: Trampolinists who fulfil one of the following criteria will be exempt from the full trial process for the 2007 World Championship team, providing they are current, (at the time of the first selection event) World Class Podium members and are deemed by the Technical Managers to be physically and psychologically fit:

1. An individual finalist at the 2006 Senior European Championships.

2. An individual finalist at the 2006 World Cup Final.

And be in the top 2 at one of the selection events above.

All trampolinists will be ranked after both the preliminary (1^st and 2^nd rounds added) and final rounds and allocated the points shown below.

Position after the preliminary round First place 6 points Second place 5 points Third place 4 points Fourth place 3 points Fifth place 2 points Sixth place 1 point.

Position after final First place 10 points Second place 8 points Third place 6 points Fourth place 5 points Fifth place 4 points Sixth place 3 points Seventh place 2 points Eighth place 1 point.

The points gained in the Preliminary and final rounds at each selection event will be added and a total for that event arrived at. The best two event totals (from the three trial events), will be added and the performers will be ranked according to these totals.

After the third trial event the performers will be ranked according to the totals of their best two events. In the event of a tie the gymnast with the highest preliminary score would take precedence in selection. Should this fail to break the tie the performer with the most points from the best two final rounds will take precedence. After any pre-selected performers, the remaining places, and 1- 3 will be allocated. Place 4 and the reserve will be ‘wild card’ selections made by the Technical Managers and justified in writing.

Whilst it is important to maintain a minimum standard of performance in order to ensure the best possibility for Olympic qualification, since this is also a team event it has been agreed that it is the intention to support a full team. The synchronised selection will come from within the individuals selected for the team with the possibility of an additional _trampolinists, (or a maximum of two performers), selected for just the synchronised event.

Non-triallists competing in the British Championships will not be awarded points. For example, if a non-triallist finishes in 1^st place and a triallist in 2^nd place (after the preliminary round) the triallist would be awarded 6 points.

Team Announcements: The Great Britain Trampoline Team for the 2007 World Championship will be named on or before 21^st September 2007.

It is the current intention; that all trampolinists will be expected to attend a training camp prior to the World Championships, 19^th – 21^st October 2007.

FLOWER CUP, Aalsmeer NED

The bi-annual eagerly awaited Flowers Cup returns to the international calendar for 2007 and British Gymnastics will be taking part with a mixed aged team, giving them ongoing international experience which will stand them in good stead for the future. The team will consist of the following:

Gymnasts: Mathew Wright, Luke Rendell, Philip Dodson, Bryony Page, Cara Jamieson, Laura Gallagher, Katy Ianson, Michael Freeman, Andrew Freeman, Katy Ianson, Tom Lewis.

This bi-annual event has attracted in access of 500 entries in the past. However, for 2007 there is a limit of 200 entries.

The team will depart for Holland on the 16^th March, returning home on the 19^th March.

The NTTC have asked me to convey their good wishes to the team for a successful competition. Ed.

The International World Games Association has distributed information regarding the candidature procedure and questionnaires to 19 potential host cities in 13 countries wishing to host the 2013 World Games, which of course includes Trampoline Synchronised, Tumbling and Double Mini Trampoline amongst its disciplines.

It is interesting to see the names of four British Cities amongst the candidatures, as well as our friends from Dublin (IRL).

The full list of prospective bidders are: Antwerp (BEL), Barcelona (ESP), Birmingham (GBR), Budapest (HUN), Chuncheon (KOR), Denver (USA), Doha (QAT), Dublin (IRL), Edinburgh (GBR), Moscow (RUS), Perth (AUS), Rotherham (GBR), Singapore (SIN), St. Paul (USA), Seville (ESP), Sheffield (GBR), Sydney (AUS), Siauliai (LTU), Kiev (UKR).

An agreement on the organization of the 9^th World Games will be concluded between the selected Host City and the IWGA early in 2008.

Judge Revalidation

Judge revalidation has now officially finished.   Clubs (if they have kept their finger on the pulse) have known about the need to revalidate all their judges by the end of 2006 and courses have been run throughout the country.   Some regions have left it very late to organise courses, others have been very pro-active in ensuring they got plenty of courses set up and therefore that all their judges are revalidated. 

Over 750 judges have attended revalidation courses.

Clubs should not now be putting forward any officials to judge unless they are revalidated.

Regions should not be accepting any un-revalidated judges for competitions and if clubs do not have enough officials because of this then their entry should be curtailed.

How does an un-validated judge rejoin the system?

They attend the second day of a judge course relevant to their current qualification i.e. a judge qualified at county level should attend a county course.  They then sit the exam along with other candidates.   If they pass, they are therefore revalidated.  If they fail they must re-sit again. 

The cost of this is £10   of which £5 is the exam and revalidation fee, and £5 for the course fee.   They are NOT permitted to just turn up and sit the exam. 

Warning

At Grade 1 and 2 events this year, if your entry has un-validated judges written on the form to take the required official positions, the entry will not be accepted.

Please do not put yourself in this embarrassing position.

GymMark

GymMark is the British Gymnastics stamp of quality

assurance for gymnastics clubs

The GymMark scheme has been developed by British Gymnastics, in partnership with Sport England and the Home Country Sports Councils, to provide recognition for clubs that are committed to providing quality gymnastics experiences. 

Gaining GymMark accreditation will mean you will be recognised by British Gymnastics, Sport England and the Home Country Sports Councils as a safe, effective and child friendly club, providing a service in the community, that children and young people, their parents / carers, and others with an interest in gymnastics, can trust.                                        Cont: Page 8

SELECTION POLICY

International Age Group Competition:

Individual Trampoline

7 - 10 November, 2007

Quebec, Canada

Format of competition: FIG Competition Rules

Eligibility:                      British citizen

As per age group criteria (11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18) in the year of competition (maximum of 4 per age group in each sex).

                                        Valid British Gymnastics membership

Performance Targets:   Medals in all groups

Note:                                  This is a self funded event and is expected to cost in the region of £1500 per person.

The selection policy described below will be applicable to the following events:

Selection Event 1: Grade 1 Competition 24 March, Birmingham

Selection Event 2: Grade 1 Competition 21 April, Cardiff

Selection Event 3: National Finals 14&15 July, Birmingham

Any trampolinists who wish to be considered for selection must have declared, in writing, to the Programme Manager, their intention to participate in the selection process by the 26^th February 2007.   The form must be submitted by the primary coach of the trampolinists.

In order to be eligible for selection, performers must gain the following scores from the 2^nd or 3^rd routine, (voluntary routine) twice in the above listed events.

Adding the two highest scores gained at the approved selection events will rank competitors accordingly. The highest scores for the 2^nd and 3^rd routine can be posted in the same competition or in separate events, as long as they are from the eligible list stated above. The first three places will gain automatic selection in rank order.  The Technical Managers may nominate the fourth place in each age group as wild cards. Wild  cards will be determined on  performance grounds, when

the trial results of all the disciplines have been considered in order not to exceed the maximum total team size of 80 gymnasts. Wild cards will be determined by the Selection Panel.

In the event of a tie, the following tie breaking process will be used according to the highest score in the final from any of the competitions listed above:

1.       The total of the counting execution judges’ scores in the Final routine (higher execution score of the Final routine).

2.       The total of all the execution judges’ scores (5) of the Final routine without eliminating the highest and lowest scores.

3.       The total of the 4 highest execution judges’ scores of the Final routine.

4.       The total of the 3 highest execution judges’ scores of the Final routine and so on until the tie is broken.

It should be noted that there is expected to be a training camp prior to departure for the IAGC.

SELECTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL AGE GROUP  COMPETITION TEAM COACHES

The coaches for the International Age Group Competition team will be:

·         Technical Manager

·         Personal Coaches (In accordance with FIG Accreditation Rules)

The coaching staff will be selected by the Technical Managers but must be justified in writing and approved by the Selection Panel. 

British Gymnastics acknowledge the role of the personal coach in competition and competition preparation; however personal coaches that attend the competition outside of the delegation will be responsible for their travel and accommodation at their own expense and by their own arrangement. 

Coaches will selected based upon the following criteria:

• The interests of the delegations’ needs
• The ability to organise, lead and respond appropriately in the competition environment
• Their international experience and performance
• Their qualification i.e. minimum and valid HPC and in good standing with the Association
• Their ability to attend required meetings, training camps and events.

The Great Britain Trampoline Team for the International Age Group Competition will be announced on or before 21^st July 2007.

·         An excellent marketing tool for increasing membership - being able to demonstrate that you have addressed issues such as equality and child protection which gives confidence to parents choosing a club for their children

·         Developing your club - the foundation for any club is its youth structure. So, by encouraging and attracting young members, you are building a strong future for your club. GymMark provides an excellent template for continuing club development

·         Developing your coaches, officials and volunteers - as part of GymMark, you'll be given help and advice in developing the skills of everyone involved in your club

·         Raising your club's profile - once accredited, your club will be listed with the relevant home country sports council and in other sporting directories, that will help you attract new members and to grow

·         A reduction of 25% on club registration with BG

·         To give parents and gymnasts the guaranteed assurance that their club is nationally recognised as Safe, Effective and Child Friendly

At the moment there are 64 British Gymnastics Clubs either solely trampoline clubs or with a trampoline section who have achieved GymMark.  Congratulations to these 64 clubs. A further 67 clubs are working towards GymMark. 

The National Trampoline Technical is especially keen to encourage all clubs to achieve the GymMark accreditation and suggest that clubs get in touch with their Regional Development Officer to discuss the process.

International Age Group Competition (IAGC)

Support Staff

British Gymnastics is well aware of the interest shown by a number of members who would wish to attend this event (i.e. personal coaches etc) whilst also having access to the FOP of both the training and competition hall.

The number of Support Staff that British Gymnastics is permitted is governed by the FIG which has clear and precise rules on how many Support Staff can be accredited for the IAGC.

The following table shows just how many Support Staff a federation can expect to be accredited:

*    full team must have at least 3 boys plus 3 girls

Technical Conference

Lilleshall 26-28 January 2007

This annual conference was attended by a small number of trampoline members. However, it was pleasing to note that they were in the majority of the rest of the BG disciplines who were present.

I personally enjoyed the two day event, but if the truth be told it is becoming rather boring, and I would suggest that it is re-scheduled to a bi-annual event for the future.

The trampoline programme covered a number of interesting, (and not so interesting subjects) and the members whom I. spoke to had nothing but praise for the varied subjects that were covered throughout the weekend, ranging from “What Coaches

Should Know about Psychology” presented by Kylie Wilson, to the newly proposed “Competition Scene” presented by Jake Bailey and Richard Ollerenshaw.

Martin Laws and Cathy Page are to be congratulated for putting together such a varied programme. Ed.

Trampoline Coach Education

Annual Report of the Coach Education Committee: (see attached statistics) Almost all the levels of coaching have shown an increase – but most notable was the vast increase in the numbers of teachers qualifying. 1070 this year compared with 688 last year.

Tutors: there have been 8 new tutors qualified and several have upgraded their tutorial level. The new ones are Robin Atkins, Mandy Daybles, Paul Greaves, Janice Kissance, Kris Lines, Jason Richardson, Natalie Travers and Mike Weinstock. There have been 15 more completed their sports specific induction. The next BG induction will be on 17/18 March at Lilleshall, and the next Trampoline induction will be in July – date and venue not yet fixed.

National Technical Conference: this was held on 27/28 January and had a programme including Phychogist Kylie Wilson “What coaches should know about Psychology”; Jack Kelly on “Linking”; Richard Ollerenshaw and Jake Bailey on the new competition scene; Florin Bulguru on the USSR training system; Ray Bevan on “Internet competitions”; and the Technical Committee Reports. If you missed it – make sure you don’t miss the next one. This is the only occasion to stop and review what you are doing and learn to do it better.

UK Coaching Certificate: the new syllabus has been introduced from January 2007.

Assistant Coach (Level 1) – for 15 year olds and older (may do the course at 14) – will only be allowed to coach in the presence of a higher level coach. Includes basic landing positions and twisting into and out of seat drop, and physical preparation.

Coach (level 2) – from 18 years (may do the course when 17) – may take classes and coach in schools but may not run a club. Includes up to back somersault in all 3 shapes and front somersaults piked. The levels ½ course which we had envisaged is being questioned and we may have to resort to only those being fast tracked to go straight to a level 2 qualification. Candidates may apply for fast track if they have passed award 9 of the proficiency scheme (or equivalent), or have a sport GCSE including trampolining at A-C grades, or be a PE teacher with some trampolining training. Existing courses which have already been advertised will go ahead with the combined ½ course.

Club Coach (level 3) – may run a club and enter children into competitions up to the level of the syllabus. Includes somersaults up to barani ball outs, cody’s and cruising. Senior coach and High Performance coach remain much the same.

Accreditation of prior learning(APL) – it is expected that most people will start at level 1. There may be accreditation of prior learning enabling some to miss some elements of certain awards. Those wishing to apply for APL to go straight into Level 2 should apply to their regional trampoline course organiser. Those wishing for APL to enter higher awards should apply to the Trampoline Coach Education Committee. Normally, all those wishing to attain a coaching award in Trampolining will begin at Level 1 or 2.

Advanced Status – it is possible to become an advanced coach at Level 2,3 or 4 by attending the next higher level course and doing the log book and theory papers.

New Resources – with the new syllabus we have tried to revise all the resources. The Level 1 (Assistant Coach) is completed. The Level 2 (Coach) is almost complete. The higher levels are still in draft. Add-on Modules – there will be add-on modules for disabilities, and pre-school (although this one is not yet ready). Further add-on modules at the different levels are envisaged. Please let us know what you would like.

Flanders Fliffus Cup BEL 27-30 Jun 07 – British Gymnastics will no longer be sending a youth team to this event in 2007.

Craig Bellis has resigned from the Chair of the Competitions Committee for personal reasons. The NTTC hope to co-opt a replacement within the next 2-3 days in time for the start of the new competition season.

Landing Mats

The FIG has recently altered the rules on Landing Mats for all FIG Sanctioned events to come into effect on 1^st January 2007.

This ruling will affect all international events held within the UK and could have a knock on affect with National events as well.  It therefore goes without saying that the cost to sports centers / clubs could be astronomical and British Gymnastics is at present convening a group of experts within the sport to look at the implications that this ruling may have within the Association; and especially trampoline sports.
